Matt Hon's three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth capped a four-run two-out rally to give Murray State a 4-1 victory over North Dakota State in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field.
The ?Breds (8-2) rally started when Tyler Owen singled back through the middle. Jason Laws followed with a single through the right side and when the ball was bobbled, Owen hustled around to score from first. Bryan Propst found a hole on the left side and Hon delivered the big blow, the first of his career.
The Bison (0-5) scratched across an unearned run in the first as Tim Jallen drew a one-out walk and went to second on a passed ball. With two outs, Eric Nutzhorn delivered an RBI single through the right side.
MSU added a pair of runs in the fifth without the luxury of a single base hit. Elliot Frey drew a leadoff walk and went to second when Kyle Tiernan was hit by a pitch. After a successful bunt moved up both runners, Daniel Hill was intentionally walked. A wild pitch scored the runner from third and a second wild pitch with two outs scored the second run of the inning.
The game was put out of reach in the sixth as Hon started the inning with a double to right center and scored on Frey's double to left. After Tiernan was hit by his third pitch of the game, Wes Cunningham delivered an RBI single off the base of the left-field fence. Jason Laws delivered the big blow with a three-run double into the gap in right center.
Daniel Calhoun (3-0) continued his dominance on the mound as he allowed just two hits and one unearned run in his second-straight complete game. He struck out a career-best 14, including eight straight from the fifth through the seventh. Josh Smith (0-2) took the loss after giving up six runs on four hits and four walks over five innings.
The two teams will play the second game of the doubleheader approximately 30 minutes after the completion of the first game.
