Murray State swept the weekly conference awards as left-hander Daniel Calhoun and outfielder Daniel Hill were named the Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher and Hitter of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Calhoun (Evansville, Ind.) earns his second-straight pitcher of the week honor after not allowing an earned run in his two appearances last week. He pitched a perfect ninth inning in the victory over Arkansas State on Wednesday. In his start against North Dakota State, Calhoun overcame an unearned run in the first inning to toss a complete-game two hitter in the 11-1 victory. He struck out a career-high 14, including the final nine outs of the game. He struck out eight straight hitters before hitting a batter and walking another. He rebounded to strikeout the next hitter to end the game.
Other than a grounder that found its way through the right side in the first inning, the only other Calhoun allowed was a bunt base hit to lead off the fourth. He finished the game by fanning at least two hitters in five of the seven innings. Calhoun ran his streak to 15.2 innings without allowing an earned run.
Hill (Germantown, Tenn.) was honored after putting on a hitting clinic over the six games. He went 15-for-26 (.577) with two doubles, five home runs, 18 RBIs and nine runs scored. He had a slugging percentage of 1.231 and an on-base percentage of .633.
Hill's biggest day came Friday when the outfielder went 5-for-7 with a double, three home runs and eight RBIs. He tied the single-game record for hits and home runs, while helping the team set a single-game record with 28 hits. He collected at least two hits and drove in two runs in five of the six games.
The ?Breds (9-3) are off to their best start since 2001 and return to the diamond March 11 to take on Mississippi Valley State. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Reagan Field.
