The Murray State athletics department has released its 2009 volleyball schedule. The schedule includes 11 home matches and three tournaments to help prepare the Racers for the Ohio Valley Conference season.
“I am excited about the level of competition in our schedule this season,” said head coach David Schwepker. “The opening tournament will definitely help us prepare for the Ohio Valley Conference portion of the season.”
The Racers will begin the year at the Middle Tennessee Invitational, Aug. 29-30 in Murphreesboro, Tenn., in the first of three-straight weekends at tournaments. The following weekend (Sep. 4-5) Murray State will travel to Bloomington, Ind., to participate in the adidas Classic hosted by the University of Indiana. The final tournament of the 2009 campaign will be Sep. 11-12 in Carbondale, Ill., when the Racers compete at the Hampton Inn of Carbondale Saluki Invitational.
The following week Murray State will open the OVC portion of the schedule and host its first match in Racer Arena for the year. The first home and OVC opponents are Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky, Sep. 18-19.
After the opening tournaments the Racers have just two other non-conference opponents on the schedule, with both matches to be contested in Racer Arena. Lipscomb comes to Murray, Ky., Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. and future OVC opponent SIU-Edwardsville comes to town Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. The game against the Cougars is slated to start two hours prior to the final home football game of the 2009 season.
The final home game of the 2009 campaign is on the schedule for Tuesday, Nov. 10 against Southeast Missouri State at 7p.m. Nov. 13-14 Murray State will be on the road at Tennessee State and Austin Peay for the final regular-season matches before the OVC Tournament, Nov. 19-21.
Murray State will be looking to improve on a third-place finish during the regular season in the OVC in 2008 and its runner-up finish at the 2008 OVC Championships. The Racers finished 2008 with an 18-13 overall record and a 13-5 mark in conference action.
