The Murray State Golf team is one round away from taking the Ohio Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship for the first time since 1991 after a second round 296 Tuesday at The Shoals GC Fighting Joe course in Muscle Shoals, Ala.
The second round ended with controversy when Cameron Carrico's 71 was disallowed after he signed an incorrect scorecard.
The ruling cost MSU two strokes meaning what would've been a seven-shot lead was cut to five.
“Cameron violated the rule of giving advice to a teammate,” MSU Head Coach Eddie Hunt said. “He made a mistake and he signed for his 71 that was actually a 73 after a two stroke penalty.”
“My dispute is that Cameron wasn't told that he was going to be assessed a penalty until after he signed his scorecard,” Hunt added. “It is unfortunate, but now we have to regroup for tomorrow and get ready to play.”
The Racers have put together two solid rounds of 289-296=585 and lead second place Austin Peay who had carded rounds of 298-292=590.
“We didn't play quite as good as we did in the first round, but our guys are really dialed in and are giving it their all on every shot,” Hunt said. “When we started on Monday our goal was to get ourselves in position to win the championship and that's what we have done, even with the trouble we had with the ruling against Cameron.”
On Wednesday, the Racers get the chance to close the deal.
“The final round will be exciting,” Hunt said. “We're in position and we'll go out tomorrow and keep playing hard.”
Chris Griffin leads the way for the Racers with a spot in fourth place in the individual race after rounds of 72-73=145, while Nick Newcomb is in fifth place with scores of 73-73=146. Mitchell Moore and Jared Wolfe share sixth place.
Carrico is out of the individual competition after having his second round score thrown out, but can still compete Wednesday for the Racers in the team competition.
The final round begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday with all 45 competitors starting at the first hole.
Murray State, Austin Peay, and Jacksonville State will play together in the final five groups with the first to tee off at 9:40 a.m.
