Craycraft Named OVC Pitcher of the Week

After tossing a complete-game five-hit shutout, Murray State junior right hander Chris Craycraft was named the Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 11, the league office announced Monday. The honor is the second for Craycraft this season after earning the award April 13. It is the fifth conference pitching honor this season as Daniel Calhoun was honored a school-record three times.
Craycraft (Lexington, Ky.) was honored after tossing his first complete-game shutout of his career. He allowed five hits and tied his career-high with nine strikeouts. He did not walk a batter and no UT Martin base runner advanced passed second base.
Craycraft dominated from the opening hitter as he fanned two in each of the first two innings. He danced around a leadoff double in the second by getting a pop up and a pair of strikeouts. He set the side down in order in the third and then fanned the final two hitters of the fourth after allowing a one-out single. A two-out double was wiped away in the fifth as Craycraft got a comebacker to end the inning before setting down the next seven Skyhawk batters. A one-out single in the eighth was wiped out on a double play before closing out the game with a fielder's choice in the ninth.
The most impressive inning of the game was the third as Craycraft needed only three pitches in the inning. He got a foul out to first and pair of groundouts to short, all on the first pitch. All in all, Craycraft needed only 103 pitches over the nine innings.
The victory improved Craycraft to 9-2 on the season and lowered his ERA 4.29. His nine victories are second in the OVC this season, behind Calhoun (10-2). Craycraft joins a group of six other pitchers to win nine games in a season at MSU. The 19 wins from Craycraft and Calhoun are the most by a duo at MSU, besting the old record of 18 set by Randy Oliver (9-2) and Mike Sims (9-3) in 1975.
