Former
players, boosters, and university staff all showed up to welcome back the
legendary coach who led the Racer program from 1981-86 and compiled a record of 42-23-2 in
leading MSU to the Ohio Valley Conference title in 1986. He ranks fourth
in wins among all MSU coaches, and his .646 winning percentage is fourth.
“I greatly
appreciate being considered a legend at Murray State and have a lot of fond
memories of my time in Murray,” Beamer commented. “I think taking the job here, after some of
coaxing from Ron Zook to take a look at the school, is the best move that I
ever made.”
At
the luncheon Beamer was treated to a roast by former MSU and NFL player, Eric
Crigler and long-time friend and MSU men's golf coach Eddie Hunt. The lunch also included two special
presentations for Beamer, including a plaque of photos commemorating his time
at Murray State. He was also presented
with the Key to the City from Murray Mayor Tom Rushing.
“I'm
proud to have been a player of Beamer's,” commented Crigler. “I think Murray State is honored to have had
you as a part of this school especially with everything you accomplished and
you truly deserve to be considered a legend.”
MSU Athletics
has a rich history of great men and women who have been outstanding either as
coaches, administrators or student-athletes and the Woodmen of the World Racer
Legends' Luncheon is being initiated to recognize, honor and remember those who
gave Murray State so much.
