National attention was bestowed upon Murray State left hander Daniel Calhoun as the junior was named to the All-Ping!Baseball Second Team Friday. The honor is the second for the Evansville, Ind. native as he was named a third-team All-America from Collegiate Baseball last month.
The 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year is receiving recognition after putting together one of the finest individual season's in Thoroughbred history. The southpaw finished the junior campaign with a record of 11-3 and a 2.32 ERA. He set a single-season record with 11 complete games and tied former Major League All-Star Kirk Rueter with the 11 victories.
More impressively, Calhoun walked just six batters in 97 innings. His 0.56 walks-per-nine-innings ranks first nationally. He also added 85 strikeouts, which is fifth-most in school history.
In his 14 starts, Calhoun allowed three earned runs or less in 13 starts, including no earned runs in two. In his second start of the season, Calhoun tossed a seven-inning complete-game four-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory over Illinois State. He came back one-week later against North Dakota State and struck out a career-best 14, while allowing one unearned run in a two-hit complete game.
Calhoun opened OVC action in a matchup against preseason pitcher of the year, Jacksonville State's Ben Tootle. Calhoun won the battle by tossing a complete-game three hitter in which he allowed one earned run and struckout eight. Calhoun came back three starts later and threw a complete-game two hitter against Southeast Missouri.
Calhoun played a key role in helping the ?Breds to their best season in over three decades with a 34-21-1 overall record.
