Murray State golfer Jared Wolfe failed in his attempt to advance to the match-play portion of the 84th US Amateur Public Links Championship in Norman, Okla. at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.
July 13, Wolfe fired an even-par 72 in round one, but came home with a 79 in the afternoon for a 151 total and a spot in 74th place in the field of 156 competitors.
Wolfe was only two shots from the top-64 and a spot in match play.
Still, the Racer senior-to-be showed some outstanding play to get to the national level.
On June 23, Wolfe won the sectional qualifier at Harpeth Hills GC in Nashville, Tenn. with rounds of 65-69=134 to take one of two spots in a field of 56 competitors.
It was the first time Wolfe qualified for the Pub-Links in three tries at the sectional level.
To be eligible for the Pub-Links, a competitor must be an amateur player who since Jan. 1, has been a public course player with a Handicap Index of no more than 4.4 and not held playing privileges at any private course.
In addition, Wolfe isn't finished with his summer golf yet, he and Racer teammate Nick Newcomb will attempt to qualify for the United States Amateur.
Wolfe plays at Lakeside GC in Lexington, Ky. July 29 in sectional qualifying, while Newcomb plays at Colonial CC in Cordova, Tenn. Aug. 3.
The MSU pair is shooting to advance to the 109th US Amateur held in Tulsa, Okla., Aug. 24-30 at Southern Hills GC.
Wolfe and Newcomb return to Murray State in the fall to play their senior 2009-10 season for the Racers.
