The National Golf Coaches Association has named its All-American Scholar Team, including three student-athletes from the
MSU's honored trio includes one sophomore, junior, and senior.
Junior Andrea Downer (
Downer is majoring in integrated studies and had an 80.4 scoring average in 2008-09. Hinteregger majors in nursing and had an 80.7 scoring average. Downer and Hinteregger played in 10 of 11 MSU events, while Yates played in all 11 events, with an 80.6 average, and is a communication disorders major.
Yates is on the list for the third time, while Downer and Hinteregger get the NGCA honor for the second time.
“I am very proud of the work our student-athletes do in the classroom in our golf program,” MSU Head Coach Velvet Milkman said. “I am especially happy for Andrea, Alexandra, and Bethany. They are the essence of what it means to be a student-athlete at MSU.”
Indeed the criteria for selection to the NGCA All-American Scholar Team identify the best of the best in the NCAA.
To start, student-athletes must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 and they must have competed in at least 50% (NCAA Division I) or 66% (NCAA Division II & III) of their team's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.
Since 1998, the MSU Women's Golf program has produced 28 All-American selections including nine in the last two years.
“It's a testament to the kind of kids that we look for,” Milkman added. “We have people who just have a great desire to be the best they can be on the course and in life, and they take their academic work very seriously.”
There were a total of 410 women's collegiate golfers recognized by the NGCA.
Austin Peay and SIU Edwardsville were the only other Ohio Valley Conference teams represented on the list.
The Murray State Women's Golf program enjoyed a grand end to their season when they advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time last April after winning the OVC Championship for the seventh time.
