Former Murray State left hander Daniel Calhoun earned his fourth All-America honor of 2009 as he earned First-Team All-America honors by CollegeBaseballInsider.com Monday. Earlier this summer, Calhoun earned second-team honors from All-Ping!Baseball and third-team honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Collegiate Baseball. He was also named to the ABCA All-South Region Second Team.
The southpaw is one of six starting pitchers on the first team. He is joined on the first team by Daniel Bibona (UC Irvine), Louis Coleman (LSU), Mike Leake (Arizona State), A.J. Morris (Kansas State) and Stephen Strasburg (San Diego State).
Calhoun (Evansville, Ind.) earned the accolades after posting an 11-3 record with a 2.32 ERA and one save. He struck out 85 and walked only six in 97 innings. His 11 complete games established a new single-season mark at MSU and his 11 wins tied former Major League All-Star Kirk Rueter for the most in a single season.
Following the 2009 season, Calhoun was selected in the 29th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. He was assigned to the New York-Penn League Batavia Muckdogs where he is 0-0 with a 2.00 ERA in five appearances. He has walked three and struck out 14 in 18 innings.
