Former Murray State All-America linebacker Nathan Williams became a professional football player Friday when he signed a contract with the United Football League's New York franchise. Williams was drafted by NY in the league's inaugural draft June 26.
The four-team league will report for training camp Sept. 1, with the seven-game season kicking off in October. The season will conclude Nov. 19 with the league's championship game being played in Las Vegas over Thanksgiving weekend.
“I am real excited about this opportunity,” said Williams. “I look forward to competing with some of the best football players out there.”
Williams (Murray, Ky.) closed out his Racer career in style as he was named the Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year after leading all of college football with 179 tackles. He was honored by being named to the prestigious Walter Camp Foundation All-America Team. The honor was just the first for Williams as he later garnered first team laurels from the Associated Press and The Sports Network.
Williams also finished fifth in the voting for the Buck Buchanan Award, honoring the top defensive player in the FCS.
NY will be coached by former San Diego Charger, Buffalo Bill, New York Jet and Minnesota Viking defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell.
