Andrus and Harper Make Opening Day NFL Rosters

Two former Murray State football players survived final cuts and have landed themselves on opening-day NFL rosters. Former Racer Shane Andrus is a member of the Indianapolis Colts, while Rod Harper is a member of the New Orleans Saints.
Andrus joined the Colts after signing as a free agent on June 9. Andrus spent his third training camp with the Colts and is making his first opening-day roster. He connected on five field goals in the first three games, including a long of 42 in preseason opener against the Minnesota Vikings.
He is currently listed as the backup kicker, but should handle the kickoff duties while Adam Vinatieri will handle field goals.
Andrus is most famously known to Racer fans for his 52 yard field goal as time expired to defeat Eastern Illinois and clinch the 2002 Ohio Valley Conference championship.
The Colts open the season Sunday afternoon at noon against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Harper was signed as a free agent by the Saints in June after putting together a record-setting season while playing for the AFL2 Arkansas Twisters. Considered a long shot to make the team out of training camp, Harper quickly made a name for himself as a receiver and a kick returner. In the second game of the preseason against the Houston Texans, Harper returned a punt 79 yards for a touchdown to give the Saints a 24-14 third-quarter lead on their way to a 39-14 victory.
Two weeks later, Harper was at it again as he scored the only Saints points of the night by returning a punt 55 yards for a touchdown. He finished the preseason by averaging 15.3 yards on 12 punt returns, including two touchdowns.
He is currently listed as third on the depth chart at wide receiver and punt returner.
The Saints open the 2009 season Sunday afternoon against the Detroit Lions. Kickoff is set for noon at the Louisiana Superdome.
