Racers Drop Opening Match of PUMA Skyhawk Invitational, 3-1

The Murray State Women's Soccer team dropped to 1-3 overall today after falling to Southern Mississippi, 3-1, in the opening day of the PUMA Skyhawk Invitational at Skyhawk Field in Martin, Tenn.
Sophie Hargreaves put the Racers ahead early as she scored her second goal of the season in the eighth minute of play off a free kick from roughly 25 yards out. The Golden Eagles answered back with a goal in the 28th minute off a corner kick to notch things up at 1-1.
The Racers fired off seven shots in the first half, but were only able to get one on goal as the two teams entered halftime tied.
MSU came out firing once again in the second half but couldn't slip anything past Sourthern Mississippi goalkeeper, Holly Cox, as she recorded four saves in the second half.
Southern Mississippi scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 79th minute and would tack on an insurance goal in the 80th mintue to earn the 3-1 victory.
MSU will continue their search for their first road win of the season as they play UMKC at noon on Sunday, Sept. 13, at Skyhawk Field in day two of the PUMA Skyhawk Invitational.
