The Murray State women's golf team bolted from the gate in the 2009-10 season opener and claimed the championship of the MSU Drake Creek Invitational at Drake Creek GC in Ledbetter, Ky.
The Racers total of 295-303-309=907 was nine shots clear of runner up Eastern Kentucky with scores of 299-305-312=916.
"I am very satisfied to see our team play so well in the opener," MSU Head Coach Velvet Milkman said. "Any time our team places four players in the top-10 that usually means a good result."
Indeed, the Racer lineup was solid from start to finish in the nine-team event.
Andrea Downer came home as the runner up in the field of 58 competitors after carding scores of 70-77-78=225, while Megan McKinney took fourth place with rounds of 77-73-76=226.
Alex Hinteregger's scores of 76-74-78=228 landed a spot in seventh, while Joyce Trus finished 10th after rounds of 72-79-78=229. Caroline Lagerborg finished 28th with scores of 79-83-77=239.
MSU's Morgan Cross had a solid 15th place showing as an individual with rounds of 77-75-79=231. Claudia Schwan placed 25th with scores of 77-79-81=237, while Jilian Brake had scores of 90-84-88=262 for a spot in 54th place.
The Racers have now won two of three events dating back to their win at the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament last April.
MSU swings into action again Sep. 27-28 at the Cincinnati Fall Classic which will be contested at Elks Run GC in Cincinnati, Ohio.
