Senior goalkeeper Tara Isbell made four saves as the Murray State women's soccer team advanced to the OVC Championship Sunday afternoon with a 0-0 tie at Eastern Illinois in Charleston, Ill., to complete regular season play.
Isbell stopped both Eastern Illinois shot attempts in overtime to record her eighth shutout of the season and 25th of her career.
“Both teams played a hard-fought game in windy conditions today, each team had chances to pick up the win,” head coach Beth Acreman said. “Great game for Jennelle Cunningham who was dangerous for us in the attack.”
Cunningham had the lone MSU (4-11-4, 3-3-2) overtime shot, a saved attempt nearly five minutes in to the second overtime session.
Both teams had 11 shots and four shots on goal in the match. Eastern Illinois (6-8-5, 3-2-3) held a slight five-to-four corners advantage.
The Racers, the 6th seed heading into next week's soccer championships, were guaranteed their spot after UT-Martin was eliminated in a scoreless draw at Southeastern Missouri.
Murray State opens quarterfinals action at the OVC Championships Thursday, Nov. 4 against third seed Austin Peay at 8:00 p.m. (EST). The teams played to a scoreless draw in their one meeting earlier this season.
“We are excited for the OVC Tournament,” Acreman said. “We have had a challenging season this year due to injuries but we are going to train hard and be focused for the tournament. Austin Peay are a much improved team, they are dangerous in attack and we will need to be ready for a tough game against them.”
