Murray State student-athlete Hunter York of the men's golf team appeared (Oct. 26) on the Wheel of Fortune game show.
York, who made the MSU squad as a walk-on, is a native of Hardin, Ky., and was part of the recorded program (Sept. 23) in Culver City, Calif.
His day at the Wheel of Fortune started slowly, but York got going in the second round when he won three puzzles. He correctly solved these phrases: “Salem, Massachusetts”, “Under the board walk –
Down by the sea monster” and “I've always dreamed of going there.”
The last puzzle netted York a week vacation in Hawaii where he'll of course, like to play some golf.
“The place I'm going is Turtle Bay Resort in Oahu,” York said. “It's an Arnold Palmer course and I'm really excited about going there and playing.”
When the dust settled, York won $24,745 in cash and prizes.
“It was a great experience,” he said. “I'll always remember going on the Wheel of Fortune, but also because I also had the chance to do a lot of site seeing while I was there and that was neat.”
York, a sophomore from Marshall County HS, made the MSU golf team during August qualifying and has competed in four events this fall with a best finish of fifth place at the UTM Skyhawk Classic (Oct. 12) when he carded scores of 72-71-69. His scoring average is 73.4 with five rounds of par or better.
York will travel with his MSU teammates to Deland, Fla., (Nov. 7) to compete in the Stetson University Invitational at Victoria Hills CC, the final event of the fall season for the Racers.
An interesting connection was made during introductions when Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak mentioned that he worked at WNBS radio in Murray in the early 1970's.
