Racers Win Seventh Straight MSU Invitational - Hunt Takes Medalist Title

MSU INVITATIONAL FINAL RESULTS
The Murray State Racers men's golf team won their seventh straight MSU Invitational championship at Miller Memorial GC in Murray, Ky., and saw junior William Hunt win his first collegiate individual title.
The Racers started the day four shots ahead of Belmont, and ended up winning by seven after they posted a final round 285 to go with a 282 and 293 for a 54-hole total 860, ahead of the Bruins' 867.
“I thought we played well when the tournament was on the line,” MSU Head Coach Eddie Hunt said. “I'm real happy for William to get his first collegiate win.”
William Hunt (no relation to head Coach Eddie Hunt) led the way for the Racers by posting a 2-under-par 69 in the final round that went with 71-72 in the first day of play for a 212 total.
MSU's Cameron Carrico was also part of the top-5 all-tournament team with a fourth-place finish after scores of 74-72-69=215, while Hunter Ford placed fifth with scores of 70-73-74=217. Patrick Newcomb finished 13th with rounds of 70-76-75=221, while Dustin Gosser placed 13th with scores of 71-78-73=222.
MSU's second team had a good showing with a fourth-place finish with scores of 294-299-298=891.
They were four shots behind third place UT Martin (879) and were paced by Tyler Brown who earned a spot on the all-tournament with team with his career-best finish of second place with scores of 73-71-70=214.
Hunter York was 21st with rounds of 72-75-76=223, while Lars King placed 23rd with scores of 73-71-80=224. Grant Price was 36th in the field of 63 competitors with rounds of 76-82-72=230.
Morehead State (895) and Morehead State (901) placed fifth and sixth, with Lambuth (902), Union (TN) (904), Lipscomb (914), UTM second team (919), Brescia (972) and Bethel (980) rounding out the field.
Hunt and teammate Patrick Newcomb made the occasion all the more memorable by wearing knee socks with their shorts on the final day.
“It's just something we starting doing every once in a couple of years ago,” Hunt said. “It's fun and something we decided to do when we go out on the course.”
William Hunt is MSU's second individual medalist in the seven years of the event, after Nick Newcomb won the title in 2009.
The Racers play Monday and Tuesday at the UTM Skyhawk Invitational at Paris Landing State Park in Paris, Tenn.
