Murray State Baseball alum Mark Riggins has been named the pitching coach for the Chicago Cubs. The announcement was made, Dec. 6, in Orlando, Fla. at Major League Baseball's winter meetings.
“It's an honor for me to me to be named the pitching coach for the Chicago Cubs,” Riggins said in a phone interview. “Really it was an honor to be in the running for the job. I'm looking forward to the coming season.”
Riggins, 53, spent the past three seasons as the Cub's minor league pitching coordinator.
Before that, he was with the St. Louis Cardinals organization for 29 years, first as a minor league pitcher, then manager and coach. Riggins was the Cardinals' pitching coach in 1995 under managers
Joe Torre and Mike Jorgensen, and was their minor league pitching coordinator from 1996-2007.
Riggins was the Cubs' choice after Larry Rothschild left after nine seasons in Chicago to take a similar job with the New York Yankees.

Riggins played at Murray State for Coach Johnny Reagan from 1976-79 and had a career record of 15-4 as a lefty pitcher.
“I'm just delighted,” Reagan said. “No one is more capable than Mark. I think with his experience at the minor and major league levels. He has the ability to work with young pitchers and veterans too. I'm very happy he earned this opportunity with the Cubs.”
Riggins thanked Reagan and Murray State University among others who have made an impact on his life and career.
“The foundation for me was my parents and my high school coach,” Riggins added. “And ultimately, it was Coach Reagan and Murray State that got me into pro ball. I give Coach a lot of credit, he never gets enough credit, for how he shaped the people that came through the MSU baseball program. I appreciate everything Murray State did for me.”
