Murray State senior first baseman Wes Cunningham was one of 30 baseball student-athletes, who excel both on and off the field, named as a candidate for the 2010 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. The winner of the award will be announced at the NCAA College World Series in June.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - classroom, character, community and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
“The candidates for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in baseball are fulfilling a commitment to their universities and, at the same time, representing those schools in the community,” said Tom Lamb, Lowe's senior vice president of marketing. “They have recognized the value of both a college degree and public service while taking advantage of the opportunity to play the game they love.”
Cunningham (Louisville, Ky.) enters his senior season as the school's all-time leader with a .393 career average. The two-time all-Ohio Valley Conference selection was rated as the No. 87 player in the College Baseball Blog Top 100 players, as well as being an honorable mention Preseason All-American by Ping!Baseball.
In the classroom, Cunningham owns a 3.35 GPA with a major in history and a minor in archaeology. He was selected to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team each of the last two seasons. Cunningham is scheduled to graduate in August, after completing a five hour archaeology excavation class this summer. After his baseball career is complete, Cunningham will pursue a masters and eventually a doctorate in history or archaeology, and continue with a career in that respective field teaching at the college level and writing.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four C's of classroom, character, community and competition.
