FIRST PITCH
The Murray State baseball team opens its home season this weekend as the Breds play host to South Dakota State. The series gets underway at 2 p.m. Friday. Saturday's game is set to begin at 1 p.m. and a scheduled 12 p.m. first pitch for the finale on Sunday.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The Jackrabbits are making their third trip to Murray in the last four season's. The Breds took two-of-three on opening weekend last season, while SDSU won two-of-three in 2007. Last season, MSU won the first two games, 6-3, 5-3, before the Jackrabbits won the finale 3-2.
The Breds are 2-4 in home openers in the Rob McDonald era. MSU defeated Bradley in the 2005 home opener and also defeated South Dakota State in last season's opener.
Weekend Weather
The weather for the weekend series with South Dakota State looks promising. Friday should be mostly cloudy with temps in the mid-40s, while Saturday will be sunny with temps in the upper 40s. Upper 40s temps are also expected for Sunday.
Jackrabbit Alum
Murray State pitching coach Paul Wyczawski is very familiar with the South Dakota State baseball program as he was a two-time letterwinner for the Jackrabbits. He earned all-NCC honors after hitting .375 his senior season. He received his bachelor's degree in health and physical education from SDSU in 1981.
Kentucky Game Postponed
Wednesday's scheduled game at Kentucky has been postponed due to cold temperatures. The game will instead be played March 15 at 3 p.m. in Lexington.
Craycraft Climbs into Top 10
Senior right hander Chris Craycraft moved into a tie for10th place on the MSU career wins list with his victory over Lipscomb. He is currently tied with Greg Englar (1972-74).
With his next victory, Craycraft will move into a tie for ninth with Craig Krause (2002-05).
Season Opening Sweep
The Breds three-game season-opening sweep over Lipscomb was the first for the program since 1963. The last three-game opening-weekend sweep came against Delta State on March 21-23, 1963. MSU has had five two-game sweeps over that span.
Tiernan Continues Streak
Senior Kyle Tiernan has run his streak of consecutive starts to 110. He started at second base in the three games against Lipscomb, after starting the previous 107 games at shortstop.
The Breds pushed across at least one run in 15 of the 27 innings in the sweep over Lipscomb. MSU scored in seven of the nine innings in the 16-6 victory in the middle game of the series. The Breds scored multiple runs in seven innings, including plating five runs in the ninth in the middle game.
Moore's Impressive Debut
Freshman Colton Moore had an impressive collegiate debut as he went 4-for-5 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored. His day started with base hits in each of first three at bats, including an RBI single up the middle in the fourth inning. He drove in his second run of the game by drawing a bases-loaded walk in the ninth.
Tiernan Drives in Five
Senior Kyle Tiernan couldn't have started his season any better. He finished the game by going3-for-5 with a career-best five RBIs. He delivered a two-run single to left field in the fifth and followed it up with a bases-clearing double to left center in the sixth.
Propst Named OVC Hitter of Week
After going 7-for-14 (.500) with a double, two home runs, five RBIs and five runs scored in the season-opening sweep of Lipscomb, Bryan Propst was unanimously named the Ohio Valley Conference Hitter of the Week for the week of Feb. 22.
Lowe's Senior CLASS Award
Murray State senior first baseman Wes Cunningham is one of 30 players nominated for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a player must be a Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - classroom, character, community and competition.
Murray State plays its first midweek home game as the Breds play host to Belmont on March 2. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
