Murray State could not get the timely hit when needed, and South Dakota State took advantage, as the Jackrabbits took the rubber game of the series, 9-4, Sunday afternoon at Reagan Field.
“South Dakota State is a good team,” said head coach Rob McDonald. “We still have a long way to go to get to where we need to be.”
SDSU (2-1) found it's offense in the second inning as Jesse Sawyer doubled off the fence in left and field and Zach Rhodes put runners on the corners with a single to left field. Jeff Fish plated a run with a sacrifice fly to right field and Beau Hanowski scored a second run with a single to right. After Hanowski stole second, Andrew Melton delivered an RBI single just inside the bag at third.
The Jacks added a run in the third as a pair of base hits put runners on the corners with one out. Hanowski drove in the runner from third with a fly ball fielder's choice to left field that was lost in the sun.
The Breds (4-2) got on the board in the fourth as Jason Laws singled to left field and went to third on a pair of groundouts. Jonathan Craycraft followed with a grounder to third that was thrown away, allowing the runner to score from third.
SDSU added two more runs in the fifth as John Lee hit a solo home run to right center and Fish later delivered a sacrifice fly to left field.
MSU got one run back as Kyle Tiernan drew a leadoff walk and stole second. With two outs, Laws delivered an RBI single to right field.
The Jacks continued to add to their lead in the sixth as Eric Cain hit a leadoff home run to right field.
The Breds continued their comeback in the sixth as Jonathan Craycraft and Noonan both singled with one out. After both runners advanced via the stolen base, Kyle Tiernan delivered a two-run double to right field.
SDSU added some insurance in the eighth as Stitz delivered a sacrifice fly to left and Lee followed with an RBI single to left field.
Blake Treinen (1-0) earned the victory after allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits over six innings. Marc Harmon (1-1) took the loss after giving up six runs on nine hits over four innings.
Laws led the offense with three hits, while Tiernan was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and two walks.
The Breds return to the diamond Tuesday afternoon as they welcome Belmont to Reagan Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
