Box Score
Freshman Colton Moore hit for the cycle and drove in a career-best six runs as Murray State put an end to a seven-game losing streak with a 12-7 victory over Saint Louis in the first game of a three-game series Friday afternoon at Reagan Field.
After reaching on a fielder's choice in his first at-bat, Moore came back with a two-run double in his next at-bat. Moore's third at-bat resulted in a triple to left center, and his fourth trip to the plate was a two-run single to right center. He capped his day by hitting a 1-2 pitch over the fence in left center. It marked the second career four-hit day for Moore and his first career extra-base hits. He scored two runs to go along with his six RBIs.
“To be honest, I didn't even realize I was going for the cycle until somebody told me afterwards,” said Moore. “I was just trying to put the ball in play. It was getting dark and I was just focussing on seeing the ball. I was able to hit it on the barrel and it went over the fence.”
The Billikens (7-7) got on the board in the second as David Blackwell was hit by a pitch and went to second on a single to right by Cody Cotter. A wild pitch advanced both runners before Mike Levine plated a run with a single into the hole at short. The errant throw to first allowed a second run to score on the play.
The Breds (5-7) got the offense going in the third as Kyle Tiernan singled to right center and Zach Noonan followed with a single through the left side. Wes Cunningham plated a run with a single up the middle before Moore drove in a pair of runs with a two-out double down the right-field line.
SLU tied the game in the fourth as a pair of hits and a walk loaded the bases with two outs. Jerry Mancusso hit an infield chopper that died on the wet infield and allowed a run to score.
MSU regained the lead in the sixth as Moore's deep fly to center got caught in the swirling wind and fell for a triple. Daniel Hill followed with an RBI single to right center.
The Billikens tied the game again in the seventh as the first two hitters were hit by a pitch and Ben Braaten delivered an RBI single through the right side.
The Breds answered right back with three runs of their own in the home-half of the inning. Noonan started the rally with a one-out single and scored on Cunningham's double off the base of the fence in left center. After Jason Laws walked and Jonathan Craycraft was hit by a pitch, Moore plated two runs with a single to left center.
SLU got three runs back in the ninth as Danny Brock hit a three-run homer to right center.
Chris Craycraft (3-1) picked up the victory after allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits and six strikeouts over seven innings. Alex Aleman (1-2) took the loss after allowing six runs on 12 hits over 6.1 innings. Dan Huff (3) picked up the save after giving up three runs, two earned, over two innings.
Noonan and Cunningham each collected three hits as the Breds tied a season-high with 18 hits. All nine hitters in the lineup had at least one hit.
The two teams play the middle game of the three-game series Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
