WKU pushed across six runs in the second and third innings as the #22 Hilltoppers put an end to Murray State's six-game winning streak with a 14-5 victory Wednesday afternoon at Reagan Field.
The Breds (11-9) got on the board in the first as Zach Noonan started the game with a triple into the gap in right center. Elliot Frey drove in Noonan with a hard single past the third baseman. Wes Cunningham nearly added to the lead as his fly ball down the left-field line was caught against the fence.
The Hilltoppers (17-5) put together a big second inning to gain the lead. A walk and a pair of singles loaded the bases for Jake Wells who promptly blooped a two-run single to shallow left field. Another walk reloaded the bases, and Matt Payton delivered a two-run double down the right-field line. Jared Andreoli added a sacrifice fly to left field and Matt Rice delivered a run-scoring single to left field.
WKU added to its lead in the third as they put up their second-straight six-run inning. Casey Dykes started the inning with a solo home run to left field. Kory Petri doubled in a run, Logan Robbins singled in another, before a third run scored on a wild pitch. Andreoli drove in the final two runs with a home run to right field.
MSU pushed across three runs in the fourth as Bryan Propst started things with a triple that hit about two-thirds of the way up the batters eye in center field. Daniel Hill followed with an RBI single up the middle. With one out, Brandon Elliott singled through the right side and Noonan walked to load the bases. Frey drew a bases loaded walk, before Cunningham delivered a sacrifice fly to center field that was caught up against the fence.
The Toppers added a pair of runs in the ninth as double and a wild pitch plated the first run, before Carter delivered an RBI single up the middle.
Kyle Tiernan got one run back in the ninth as he delivered a pinch-hit home run to right field.
Jake Donze (2-3) took the loss after allowing six runs on four hits and four strikeouts in 1.1 innings. Craig Stem (1-1) picked up the win in relief as he struckout one in two-thirds of an inning.
A trio of Breds relievers held WKU to just two runs over the final 6.2 innings. Matt McGaha started the stretch by allowing just two hits and struck out four over 2.2 innings. Alex Love followed by fanning one in two hitless innings. Marc Harmon closed things out by allowing two runs on three hits over two innings.
Frey finished the game by going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. He was also hit by a pitch for the 31st time in his career, one shy of tying the school record. Hill was the only other Bred with a pair of hits by going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Breds return to the diamond Saturday afternoon as they open Ohio Valley Conference action at Austin Peay. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
