The Murray State Men's Golf team fired an opening 298 Friday at the FAU Spring Break Championship in Delray Beach, Fla., at Gleneagles GC.
The Racers are playing in the best field of the season that has 10 teams ranked in the top-100 in NCAA D-I including defending champion Illinois who is the highest ranked team (12th) in the field of 16 teams and has the lead after a first round 282.
The Racers were led by Nick Newcomb who is in third place after a 3-under 68.
MSU's Chris Griffin was in 55th place in the field of 93 competitors after a 4-over 76, while Jared Wolfe and Patrick Newcomb were in 60th place after each carded a 77. Cameron Carrico was in 76th place after a 79.
MSU shared 10th place with Marquette, South Florida and St. Mary's who also had a 298. Northern Illinois (301), Ohio State (302) and Wisconsin (306) rounded out the field.
Notre Dame was in second place at 288, with Penn State (290), Michigan (290), Florida Atlantic (291), Florida Gulf Coast (291), Minnesota (293), Eastern Michigan (293) and Iowa (295) rounding out the top nine teams.
Round two of the 54-hole event begins Saturday morning.
