Govs Complete Doubleheader Sweep of Breds

Austin Peay pushed across seven runs in the first two innings and never looked back in completing the doubleheader sweep over Murray State with a 14-8 victory Saturday afternoon at Raymond C. Hand Park.
The Govs (13-9, 2-0 OVC) continued their offense in the first inning of the second game as Jon Clinard walked ahead of Jared DeLong's single to left field. When the ball skipped by the left fielder, Clinard came around to score and DeLong ended up on third. Trey Lucas followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, before Adam Browett drove in the third run with a home run to center field.
APSU padded its lead in the second as they pushed across four more runs to open up a seven-run lead. Clinard delivered a two-run single through the right side and Lucas later added an RBI single through the left side. The fourth run scored on a successful double steal with runners on the corners.
The Govs added three runs in the fourth on a run-scoring single from Lucas and a two-run double from John Hogan.
The Breds (11-11, 0-2 OVC) got on the board in the fifth as Kyle Tiernan doubled off the top of the center field wall with one out. After moving to third on a groundout, Jason Laws walked ahead of Colton Moore's RBI single to left field. Tyler Monkman followed with a run-scoring double to left field.
APSU got the two runs back in the home-half of the inning as Clinard drew a one-out walk and scored on Lucas' home run to left center.
MSU had their best inning of the day in the sixth as Elliot Frey was hit by a pitch to start the inning. It was the 32nd time he was hit by a pitch in his career, tying him with Ronnie Seets for the school record. With one out, Zach Noonan reached on a fielding error and Tiernan walked to load the bases. Wes Cunningham delivered the big blow with an opposite-field grand slam to left center.
APSU got two runs back on Hogan's two-run home run to right field.
The Breds scored two more run in the seventh as Frey had a bunt base hit and went to second on Elliotts's walk. Noonan drove in a run with a single into the hole at short before Tiernan delivered a sacrifice fly to left center.
Ryne Harper (3-0) picked up the victory after allowing two runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings. Dan Huff (1-3) took the loss after allowing 10 runs on 10 hits in three innings of work.
The two teams will play the final game of the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
