Spring Practice #8

The Murray State football team returned to the field early this morning for their eighth practice of the Spring. The Racers were in shells in preparation for the their second scrimmage on Friday.
“We are getting back into the mix a little bit more, and I am real pleased with our retention from before the break to now,” said head coach Chris Hatcher. “Again, it is a process that is going to take some time. We are still making some silly mistakes on alignment and some base assignments. But, overall, the effort has been good and I hope come Friday we will have worked some of the kinks out from spring break, and we will get us a good scrimmage.”
One of the key factors for the Racers in 2010 will be the play of the offensive line. MSU returns three starters from last season in guards Raymond Hopson and Dylan Mundella, and tackle Rodercik Tomlin. They also have experience with sophomores Andy Mahoney and Brock Rydecki, along with redshirt freshman Darren Baker. Junior college transfer C.J. Matthews looks to make an immediate impact up front.
The offensive line will have to adapt to a new offensive scheme to much more up tempo wide open offense.
“I think they have adapted well. We have changed basically everything they have been accustomed to doing to fit our system,” said Hatcher. “They have really been working hard and I think we have a couple good ones up there, and a couple that have a chance to help us next year if they can get a little meaner.”
“Right now the game, at times, is really fast to them because we ask them to do a lot of thinking in just a matter of two or three seconds. It seems that when they know what to do, they do a pretty good job. But, when we get more up tempo, they have a little bit of trouble. That is to be expected. That is nothing new when you put a in a new system, so we just keep practicing to get better. Right now, I am really pleased. I think we have five guys up there that we have a chance to win with, and a couple of those other guys are going to have to come along in a hurry for us to have a chance next season.”
The Racers return to the field Friday morning at 5:20 a.m. when they hold their second scrimmage of the Spring.
