MSU Golf Wins UK Bluegrass Invitational

The Murray State men's golf team came home with the championship of the UK Bluegrass Invitational at The University Club of Kentucky, in Lexington, Ky.
The Racers managed to fight to the finish in Sunday's final round on a difficult course with a team 288 and total of 850 to nip Memphis and Auburn by one shot at 851. Miami (OH) was fourth at 853, while the host school, Kentucky was in fifth place at 854.
MSU started the event Saturday morning with a solid even-par round of 284 on the Big Blue Course that played to a par of 71 and 7,013 yards, but really made a move in the second round when they fired a six-under 278. MSU's 850 was two-under and gave them their third win of the 2009-10 season.
Individually, MSU's Cameron Carrico finished third in the field of 128 competitors with scores of 70-66-73=209, while Nick Newcomb finished fifth with rounds of 70-72-68=210. Jared Wolfe placed 17th with scores of 73-70-71=214, while Chris Griffin was 46th with rounds of 74-70-76=220. Patrick Newcomb carded scores of 71-78-81=230 for a spot in 106th.
The medalist winner was Auburn's John Stembridge at 206.
South Alabama finished sixth at 856, while UNC-Greensboro (858), Toledo (868), Morehead State (871) and Ohio (876) made up the top-10 in the field of 24 teams.
The Racers' next challenge is the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament at Greystone GC April 26-28 in Dickson, Tenn.
