Spring Practice #14

The Murray State football conducted its final practice of the Spring as it went through a two-hour practice in the early morning hours on Wednesday.
“The big thing is we didn't have the effort, as far as running to the ball on both sides and finishing plays, on Saturday or Monday like we wanted,” said head coach Chris Hatcher. “So today the big emphasis was on running to the ball and playing to the echo of the whistle, and we improved a great deal in that area.”
“I think from a scheme standpoint, we are starting to understand the base schemes and our guys are finally starting to figure out we want to play hard all the way to that whistle.”
The team continued to implement more of the offensive and defensive scheme, as well as spend some times working on punt and kickoff coverage.
“We were able to work some more kicking game in today,” said Hatcher. “I feel real good about the way Kienan Cullen is kicking the ball. I know he is an all-conference performer returning. We have a lot of work to do with our deep snapping to get that honed in.”
Quarterback Jeff Ehrhardt led the first-team offense out at the end of practice and completed his first four passes, including a pair of 15-yard hook-ups with Rashad Daniels and Ja-Vonta Trotter. Cornerback Ryan Robinson made a break on an out route on the next play to bat the ball away. On the next play, defensive back Josh Brown intercepted the Ehrhardt pass and returned it 67 yards for the score.
The drive continued into the red zone and Prince Nwagbara finished things off by bursting up the middle for the six-yard touchdown.
Casey Brockman brought the second team offense on the field and completed a pair of passes, but was sacked two times. Running back Justin Woodard had a couple nice runs, before the practice ended with Tarvis Milam reaching up and grabbing a deflected ball out of the air in the endzone for a touchdown.
“All in all, it has been a good spring. Tomorrow night, our goal is to come out here and divide the team so the first team offense will go against the first team defense,” said Hatcher. “I think we have accomplished what we wanted during the Spring. We got a good evaluation on everybody and tomorrow night we just want to see it all come together, have a good time and hopefully, we will have us a big crowd out here to the watch the new edition of the Murray State Racers.”
Murray State will host the first annual Blue and Gold Bowl Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. inside Stewart Stadium.
