The Breds (19-17) got on the board in the first inning as Brandon Elliott doubled to left field and scored when Wes Cunningham singled and the ball was bobbled in right field. Bryan Propst singled to left field and Daniel Hill reached on a sac bunt to load the bases. A double-play ball off the bat of Jason Laws plated the second run.
The Cougars (12-23) got an unearned run back in the home-half of the inning as James Vazquez reached on a fielding error and went to third on Adam Eggemeyer's double just inside the bag at first. Dustin Brooks drove in Vazquez with a groundout to short.
MSU added to their lead in the third as Cunningham dropped a single into right field on an 0-2 pitch and went to third on Propst's double down the left-field line. Hill drove in two runs with a single to right center. Laws followed with a single through the left side and Colton Moore plated a run with a single up the middle. Cory Hodskins dropped a single into right field to load the bases for Elliot Frey who was hit by an 0-2 pitch to plate the fourth run.
SIUE added a run in the fifth as a pair of singles put two on with two outs. Joel Greatting plated a run with a single to right field, but Hill came up firing and nailed the runner trying to advance to third on the play to end the inning.
The Breds answered back in the sixth as Cunningham reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Propst's two-run blast to left field, his 10th of the season.
The Cougars pushed across three runs in the sixth on three hits and a Breds throwing error. The Hawkins brothers singled to start the inning before the next two hitters flew out. The third run scored when Brooks' slow chopper to short was thrown in the dirt at first.
MSU added to its lead in the eighth as Elliott and Cunningham walked to start the inning. With one out, Hill reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Laws followed with a grounder to second that was thrown away at second to drive in a run and keep the bases loaded. Colton Moore followed with a grounder to second that got the force at second base, but the return throw sailed away at first and allowed two runs to score.
SIUE got a run back in the ninth as Matt Matecki beat out an infield single and scored on Greatting's triple to left center. Reliever Will Handlin minimized the damage right there as he got a flyout to right, a strikeout looking and a comebacker to end the game.
Love (5-0) picked up the victory after allowing five runs, three earned, on 10 hits and two strikeouts over six innings. Mitchell Fairley (0-5) took the loss after allowing six runs on nine hits over three innings.
Elliott, Cunningham and Propst each collected three hits, while Propst, Hill and Moore each drove in a pair of runs.
