Racers Hit the Road for Five of Seven Games This Week

The Murray State softball team will have its final busy week of the 2010 campaign. The Racers will play seven games this week, including their last mid-week and non-conference games of the season. MSU first travels to SIU Edwardsville for a double header, Tuesday, April 20 starting at 3 p.m. The Racers then host Mid Continent in the final non-conference games of the year, Thursday, April 22 in double header action starting at 3 p.m. The final games of the week will be a road Ohio Valley Conference series against Eastern Kentucky, April 24-25.
Scouting the Cougars
SIUE heads into Tuesday's game with a 22-19 overall record in its final transition season to a full Division I and OVC team. The Cougars have been idle since April 14 when they fell at Bradley, 4-2
Lindsey Barron is the team's current batting leader, with a .336 batting average and 38 hits. She has also contributed 12 RBIs. Whitney Davis is second on the team in batting average and hits (.304/35) and also second in RBIs, with 19.
Erika Taylor has been SIUE's go-to pitcher this sesaon, appearing in 29 of the 41 games. She has thrown 24 complete games and recorded six shutouts. Taylor has an ERA of 3.24 and a 16-12 record, with 151 strike outs to her credit.
Against SIU Edwardsville
Tuesday's game will be the fourth and fifth meetings in 2010 between the Racers and the Cougars. The team's met twice in the opening tournament of the season at Ole Miss, SIUE earning two wins, and then at Racer Field, MSU earning a victory.
Junior Taylor Wilson has had the most success against SIUE's pitching staff, hitting .714, with five hits, two home runs, one triple and one double for a slugging percentage of 2.000. Freshman Stephanie Edwards has a .500 batting average, with four hits, while rookie Ellyn Troup and junior Stephanie Mattocks have both hit .375 against SIUE.
Junior Kristen Broadway earned the victory in the circle against the Cougars when they came to Murray (March 17). She has a 1.40 ERA and seven strike outs, while holding SIUE's batters to a .118 batting average.
For the Cougars, Davis has a .333 batting average against MSU pitchers, with one home run. Chaleen Rumph hit .300 against the Racers, while Barron has a .250 batting average against MSU pitchers.
Taylor has a 2-1 record against MSU this season, with a 4.85 ERA. She shut out the Racers once and has thrown one complete game against them. She recorded 20 strike outs and a .188 batting average.
Scouting Mid Continent
Also known as the Cougars, Mid Con is currently 12-24-1 overall and 4-10 in the TranSouth Athletic Conference, as part of the NAIA. The Cougars will play four games before heading to Racer Field Thursday.
While Mid Con has a .260 team batting average, there are six batters hitting over .300 and one of those hitting over .400. Jackie Lloyd is the clear hitting leader, with a .442 batting average on 46 hits. Maegan Wilson is next on the list with a .375 batting average. Victoria Spindor and Amber Rapert are the team's leaders with 18 RBIs each.
The Cougars have a four-pitcher rotation for the season. Wilson has appeared in a team-high 19 games, while Kelly Fougerousse has made 12 appearances. Wilson is 2-10 overall and Fougerousse is 4-6 on the year. Wilson is the team's leader with 68 strike outs.
Scouting the Colonels
EKU is 12-31 heading into this week's action and will be idle until the Racers head to Richmond for the weekend series. The Colonels have gone 6-11 in OVC play so far on the season.
Diane Gallagher is leading the team with a .331 batting average and 48 hits. Raquel Howes is first on the team with 20 RBI's, while Jnea Handley has tallied 19.
EKU has used five pitchers this season in the circle, but two have earned the majoring of the action. Stacey Toups has pitched 114 innings and has a 6-6 record. She has a 2.58 ERA and an opponent batting average of .280, with 62 strike outs to her credit. Kristin Perry has made 25 appearances, with a 5-13 mark. She has an ERA of 3.72, with 117 strike outs and an opponent batting average of .201.
Against Eastern Kentucky
While this weekend's games will be the first league match ups for the Racers and the Colonels, the team's have already faced each other once this season. MSU earned a 5-4 (8 inning) victory over the Colonels during the Lady Bison Tournament (March 7). Junior Jenna Bradley hit a home run in the top of the seventh inning to help force the extra innings, as the team was down 1-0. However, EKU tied the game in the bottom of the seventh before the Racers earned the extra inning victory. Freshman Starr Gilley threw 4.2 innings and recorded a career-best six strike outs. Cassi Gibson tallied three hits for the Colonels, while Ashley Dollins added two hits. Toups pitched 3.2 innings, with five strike outs and Mea Flores threw 4.1 innings and earned the loss.
Home Run Derby
The third game in the series with Southeast Missouri State turned into a home run derby for the Racers, with all nine of their runs coming because of one of four home runs hit during the game. Junior Stephanie Mattocks started MSU off by hitting her first career grand slam in the bottom of the first. Junior Jenna Bradley followed with a solo home run in the second, junior Lauren Buch then hit a two-run shot in the third and freshman Kaitlyn England finished the day off with a two-run homer in the fourth.
Two-Out Rally
The games against the Redhawks saw MSU tally a total of 24 runs. The first 20 of those runs were scored with two outs on the scoreboard, and the next two came with one out.
Putting Racer Name in NCAA Stats
In games through April 11, 2010, MSU was ranked No. 22 in the NCAA for stolen bases per game at 1.97. Sophomore Megan Glosser was ranked No. 14 individually in the same column, with 0.65 stolen bases per game. MSU also had four other players ranked in the top-100 in the NCAA statistics. Junior Jenna Bradley is ranked No. 56 in RBIs per game (0.94), No. 72 in home runs per game (0.26) and No. 74 for total home runs (9). Pitchers Kristen Broadway and Shelby Kosmecki are both 36th in saves (2). Freshman Megan Belio is also ranked No. 46 in triples (3).
First Series Sweep
The Racers earned their first series sweep, with their 6-2 and 6-1 wins over Bethel, April 8 at Racer Field. The double header victory also marked the second time that MSU has swept a double header.
Putting Two Games Together
The Racers earned their first sweep of a double header, April 2, against Tennessee Tech. MSU earned a 12-6 decision in the first game of the day before coming from behind in the top of the seventh to earn a 6-1 win in the night cap.
First Conference Series
The Racers went 1-1 in their first OVC series at Tennessee State. MSU earned an 8-1 victory in the opening game of the day before falling 7-5 in game two. The third game is the series was then rained out.
First Grand Slam
After garnering her first career home runs against SIU Edwardsville (March 17), junior Taylor Wilson became the first Racer to record a grand slam. Wilson hit a shot over the left field fence at Louisiana-Monroe in the top of the second inning, March 23.
Home Run Weeks
From March 17 to March 27 the Racers more than doubled their home run performance on the season. In the first 13 games of the season MSU tallied six home runs, but in those nine games that total jumped 14, to 20. Freshman Ellyn Troup and juniors Jenna Bradley and Taylor Wilson led the production with three each. Troup and Bradley both had a game-winning home run in their totals, while Wilson recorded the team's first grand slam against Louisiana-Monroe (March 23). Freshman Kaitlyn England added two, while rookies Madi Ratliff and Stephanie Edwards and junior Lauren Buch each recorded one.
Picking Up First Win
The Racers earned their first collegiate victory, March 3, 2010 against Evansville (6-2) in the second game of a double-header at Racer Field. MSU followed with its second win over Eastern Kentucky, March 7, 2010 at the Lady Bison Classic hosted by Lipscomb in Nashville, Tenn.
Up Next
After this weekends games at EKU, the Racers will have all of the next week off before hosting Morehead State (May 1-2) in the final OVC series at Racer Field. The final regular-season series is scheduled for May 8-9 at Eastern Illinois.
