The Murray State baseball team continues its midweek road swing as the Breds travel to Carbondale, Ill. to take on Southern Illinois. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Abe Martin Field. The two teams met earlier in Murray with MSU coming away with an 8-3 victory.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The Breds and Salukis are meeting for the 52nd time on the diamond. SIU holds a 40-11 advantage in the all-time series. The Salukis hold a 21-4 advantage in the series in the games played in Carbondale.Â
Earlier Meeting vs. SIU
Zach Noonan and Wes Cunningham each collected three hits, and Daniel Hill drove in three runs as the Breds defeated Southern Illinois, 8-3, March 17 at Reagan Field. Jake Donze picked up the victory after allowing three runs, two earned, over seven innings.
Breds vs. The Missouri Valley
Murray State is 1-2 against the Missouri Valley Conference this season. The Breds defeated Southern Illinois, but dropped a home-and-home series with Evansville.
Two With Double Digit Home Runs
Seniors Wes Cunningham (14) and Bryan Propst (10) have teamed up to become the second set of teammates to reach double digit home runs in as many years. Last season, Daniel Hill (16) and Cunningham (11) became the first duo since 1999 to reach double figures.
Midweek Road Games
The April 13 game against Evansville marked the final midweek home game for the Breds. MSU plays it's final six midweek games away from home. MSU plays five “true” road games before playing Kentucky in a neutral site game at Brooks Stadium May 18.
Four Hour Game
Murray State played one of its longer gmes in the game against Evansville on April 13 as the contest lasted four hours and four minutes. It was the longest game for the Breds since MSU and Southeast Missouri played a four hour and eight minute game on March 25, 2005.
Scouting Southern Illinois
The Salukis enter their midweek schedule with an overall record of 16-20. SIU is coming off being swept by Ilinois State over the weekend.
SIU plays host to OVC foe Southeast Missouri Tuesday afternoon, before entertaining the Breds on Wednesday.
The Salukis are 6-2 against teams from the OVC, prior to their game with SEMO Tuesday. SIU took the series from JSU, swept a pair of games from UT Martin and own victories over Eastern Illinois and SEMO. The losses came against JSU and Murray State.
SIU is hitting .332 in non-conference games, and averaging 12.5 hits and 9.8 runs in those contests.
In four games last week, the Salukis were just 3-for-35 (.086) with runners in scoring position.
On Deck
The Breds return to Ohio Valley Conference as they welcome Eastern Illinois to Reagan Field on April 24-25. The series is set to get underway Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. doubleheader. The series concludes at 1 p.m. Sunday.
