The Murray State Racers played a brilliant stretch of six holes to start the final round of the 2010 Ohio Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship in Dickson, Tenn., at GreyStone GC and it helped them carry a five-shot lead into the final nine holes Saturday morning.
Starting the final round down by six shots, the Racers needed something big and they got it from senior Joyce Trus who carded three birdies in the first six holes.
The burst by Trus helped the Racers play the first six holes three-under, while JSU played them three-over, which allowed MSU to erase the deficit and tie the score with each team 25-over par for the event.
The Racers finished the nine holes with a 143 and completed an 11-shot swing after JSU carded a 154.
"I am very pleased with the way we played today," Racers head coach Velvet Milkman said. "The ladies really stepped up to the challenge and we're excited about the opportunity to go out tomorrow to try and defend our title."
Trus led the Racers with a two-under 34, while Andrea Downer and Morgan Cross each had an even-par 36. Megan McKinney had a one-over 37 and Caroline Lagerborg's 41 rounded out the scoring for MSU.
In collegiate golf, the top four scores are counted out of a team of five players.
Nine holes of the final round were contested Friday after the completion of the second round because of forecasted bad weather that is due to move into the area Saturday.
The first tee time for the final nine holes begins Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with MSU starting at 9:40 a.m.
