Panthers Take Series Opener

Eastern Illinois scored at least one run in six of the seven innings as they erased an early deficit to hand Murray State an 8-6 defeat in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Reagan Field.
The Panthers (10-26, 5-9 OVC) got on the board in the second as the first two hitters reached on a single and a hit batter. After a sacrifice bunt advanced both runners, Matt Kucharski delivered a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Breds (19-19, 6-4 OVC) responded in the home-half of the inning as Jason Laws drew a one-out walk and went to third on Cory Hodskins' single to right center. After falling behind 0-2, Kyle Tiernan singled over the head of the first baseman to score Laws. Elliot Frey was the next to fall behind 0-2 and deliver an RBI single through the right side. The streak continued as Brandon Elliot fell behind 0-2 before plating a run with a single down the right-field line.
EIU got one run back in the third as Zach Borenstein singled through the right side and went to second on a wild pitch. Alex Gee drove in the runner with a single through the right side.
MSU responded in the bottom of the inning as Bryan Propst singled through the left side and advanced to second when the first baseman dropped the ball on a pickoff attempt. With one out, Laws singled through the right side to plate Propst with the unearned run.
A leadoff walk came back to haunt the Breds in the fourth as Matt Kucharski drew the base on balls and went to third on a pair of groundouts. Borenstein drove in the runner with a single through the right side.
The Panthers regained the lead in the fifth as Ben Thoma hit a pinch-hit double to right center and scored when Gerik Wallsten's ball was dropped in right center. Wallsten later scored on Matt Kucharski's single to center field.
EIU stretched its lead in the sixth as a single and a walk put two runners on with two outs. Thoma drove in a run with a single to right field.
The Panthers added the game-winning runs in the seventh on Borenstein's two-run home to left center.
The Breds threatened in the bottom of the seventh as Elliott drew a walk and scored on Wes Cunningham's triple down the right-field line. Two batters later, Daniel Hill blooped a single into right field to score Cunningham. For Cunningham, the triple was the 12th in his career, tying him with Jack Perconte for the all-time record at MSU
Josh Mueller (1-1) picked up the victory after allowing six runs, five earned, on eight hits and 10 strikeouts in the complete game. Chris Craycraft (5-3) took the loss after allowing six runs, five earned, on 11 hits over 5.1 innings.
The two teams play the second game of the doubleheader approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
