After becoming Murray State's single-season record holder for hits and RBIs, senior first baseman Wes Cunningham was named the Pepsi Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of May 3-9.
Cunningham (Louisville, Ky.), who was honored as the OVC Hitter of the Week for the second straight week, went 7-for-11 (.636) with a double, triple, home run and 12 RBIs. The senior tied or broke four single-season or career records in the three games. He started the weekend by going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs in the series-opening victory, and followed it up by going 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs in the second game of the doubleheader. It marked the eighth time this season he tied his career mark of four RBIs in a game.
Cunningham saved his best performance for the finale as he went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and career-best six RBIs. With the team leading 3-1 in the fifth, Cunningham came up with the bases loaded and delivered a three-run double into the gap in left center. The three RBIs gave him 69 on the season and tied him with teammate Daniel Hill (2009) for the single season record. Just one inning later, Cunningham stepped back to the plate and ripped a two-run triple into the corner, giving him the single-season RBI record to himself. The hit was also his 81st of the season, tying him with Craig Delk (1998) for the single-season record. The triple also break a tie with Jack Perconte (1973-76) for the most triples in a career (13). Cunningham would draw a bases-loaded walk in his final at-bat to raise his season total to 72 RBIs.
The Breds close out the 2010 home season on May 15-16 as they host Morehead State. The series gets underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, and concludes with a 1 p.m. first pitch Sunday.
