After outlasting a five-hour-17-minute rain and pitching on zero days rest, Murray State senior right hander Alex Love tossed his first complete game of his career in a 14-4 victory Eastern Illinois in an elimination game Friday afternoon/evening at Pringles Park.
Love (8-1) pitched the final five innings in the Breds victory over Southeast Missouri yesterday afternoon, before being given the ball against the Panthers this afternoon. Love got plenty of offensive support as he gutted it out for eight innings before mother nature intervened with the Breds batting in the top of the ninth.
At just after 11 p.m., Love stepped back on the mound in front a few Breds fans and closed out the victory. He finished the game by allowing four runs, three earned, on 11 hits and three strikeouts over the nine innings. He tossed 126 pitches, after needing 52 yesterday.
The Breds (28-27-1) continued momentum from the first game into the first inning as Zach Noonan singled to left center and came around to score on Wes Cunningham's double down the left-field line. Bryan Propst followed with a single to left center and when the throw home bounced over the head of the catcher, Cunningham scored from third and Propst took second. Just a few pitches later, Jason Laws plated Propst with a single to left field.
The first inning was just a warmup for the second as the Breds registered six hits and took advantage of a throwing error to score seven runs in the frame. Jonathan Craycraft started the inning with a double to left center and runners were on the corners after Elliot Frey's sacrifice bunt was thrown wide to first by the pitcher. Noonan scored Craycraft with a bunt single to first base. After a fielder's choice put runners on the corners with one out, Cunningham singled off the body of the pitcher to load the bases.
The hottest hitter in the tournament, Propst, stepped to the plate and delivered a bases-clearing triple down the left-field line. For Propst, it was his sixth double of the tournament and set a new OVC Tournament neutral-site record.
Following a two out walk to Daniel Hill, Kyle Tiernan delivered a run-scoring single through the right. Another walk to Craycraft loaded the bases and Frey followed with a two-run single up the middle.
Cunningham came calling again in the fifth inning as he hit the second pitch of the inning over the wall in left field for an opposite-field shot. It was his 22nd home run of the season , as well as his 85th RBI, tying the OVC single-season record set by Eastern Kentucky's Neil Sellers in 2003. The homer also raised his season total to 192 total bases, passing the mark of 191 set by Austin Peay's Nate Manning in 1986.
The Panthers (18-35) got on the board in the fifth inning as Richie Derbak reached on an error and Zach Borenstein followed with a single through the left side. Alex Gee brought all three runners home with a home run to right field.
The Breds responded with a run in the top of the sixth as Frey delivered a two-out hustle double to right center and scored on Noonan's single to center.
Following the long delay, the Breds came out with Cory Hodskins singling to center on the first pitch. Colton Moore followed with a double into the corner, and Hodskins scored on the throwing error. Laws plated a second run with a sacrifice fly to left field.
EIU was able to score a run in the bottom of the inning as Daniel Rowe doubled off the wall in right and scored on Borenstein's single to center.
Mike Recchia (6-6) took the loss after allowing 10 runs, five earned, on nine hits over 1.2 innings.
Noonan went 4-for-6 with a pair of RBIs in the leadoff spot, while Propst continued to swing a hot bat by going 4-for-5 with three RBIs. Cunningham and Tiernan had three hits each, while Laws and Frey added two in the 22-hit attack.
The Breds return to Pringles Park Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. against the loser of the Jacksonville State-Tennessee Tech contest.
