Cunningham Unanimous Selection as OVC Hitter of the Week

Just one day after setting the Murray State single-season home run record in a doubleheader sweep over Southeast Missouri, senior first baseman Wes Cunningham was the unanimous selection as the Ohio Valley Conference Hitter of the Week for the week of May 3, announced the league office.
Cunningham (Louisville, Ky.) finished the week by going 5-for-12 (.417) with three home runs and nine RBIs. He began his week by belting his second grand slam of the season in the Breds seven-run seventh inning at #14 Ole Miss. The slam helped MSU erase a nine-run deficit in forcing extra innings.
In the first game of a doubleheader against SEMO, Cunningham saved his heroics for the end as he stepped to the plate in the seventh inning with the Breds trailing by one. With two outs and MSU down to its last strike, Cunningham hit a hanging changeup over the wall in right center to tie the game and force extra innings. One inning later, Kyle Tiernan delivered a two-run shot to give MSU the 5-3 victory.
The momentum carried to the second game as Cunningham roped an RBI single through the right side as part of a seven-run first inning. Three innings later, Cunningham put his name at the top of the record books as he belted a three-run homer to right center to help the Breds complete the sweep of the first-place Redhawks.
Cunningham's third homer of the week moved his season total to 17, passing the old record of 16 held by Daniel Hill (2009), Gary Blaine (1984) and Clay Boone (1981). The record is the second single-season mark set by Cunningham this season after setting the total bases mark last week.
The records may continue to fall this season as Cunningham is on pace to set the single-season record for runs scored, hits, RBIs and slugging percentage.
The Breds currently sit just a half game back of SEMO for first place in the OVC. MSU returns to the diamond Saturday afternoon as they begin a three-game series against Eastern Kentucky. The doubleheader is set to get underway at 1 p.m. at Reagan Field.
