Just days after setting the single-season home run record at Murray State, first baseman Wes Cunningham was honored in a different way Thursday as he was selected to the CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team. Cunningham will now be placed on the ballot for the Academic All-America Team that will be released later this month.
Cunningham (Louisville, Ky.) owns a 3.35 GPA in history, with a minor in archeology, and was honored as a first-team selection for the third-straight year.
On the field, Cunningham is hitting .425 with 15 doubles, four triples, 17 home runs and 60 RBIs. He has already set the single-season home run and total bases record, and is on pace to set single-season records in hits, RBIs, runs scored and slugging percentage. Cunningham tied the home run record in the first game of a doubleheader at Southeast Missouri on Sunday as the Breds were down to the their last strike. Cunningham hit a 2-2 hanging breaking ball over the fence in right center to tie the game. Kyle Tiernan came up one inning later and hit the game-winning two-run homer to right.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Cunningham helped extend the Breds lead in the fourth inning as he hit the first pitch he saw over the fence right center to set the record. The blast gave MSU a 10-4 lead on their way to a 13-9 victory and moved the Breds into second place in the OVC standings, just one-half game back.
Cunningham has enjoyed success throughout his career at MSU as he is the all-time leader with a .404 career batting average. Before his career is complete, Cunningham will be the all-time leader in hits, triples and total bases, and go down as one of the greatest hitters in MSU history.
The Breds return to the diamond Saturday afternoon as they host Eastern Kentucky. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at Reagan Field.
