Murray State got three hits each from Wes Cunningham and Jason Laws as the Breds pounded out 14 hits in completing a doubleheader sweep over Eastern Kentucky with a 9-6 victory Saturday afternoon at Johnny Reagan Field.
The Breds (23-21, 10-5 OVC) got on the board in the first inning again as Zach Noonan beat out an infield single and was sacrificed to second by Brandon Elliott. Cunningham took liking to the first pitch he saw and deposited over the fence in right field for his 18th home run of the season. With two outs, Laws doubled to left center and scored on Colton Moore's single to center field.
MSU added to the lead in the second inning as Jonathan Craycraft singled to center field to start the inning. Elliot Frey bunted for a base hit and Noonan's reached as his bunt attempt was bobbled by the pitcher. Cunningham delivered a sacrifice fly to center field and Bryan Propst followed with an RBI single through the left side. Laws plated the third run with a single to center and Moore closed out the scoring with a run-scoring single to right field.
The Colonels (22-21, 8-9 OVC) got on the board as a single and a pair of walks loaded the bases with one out. After a strikeout looking, Ryan Faidley drew a walk on a full count to score a run.
EKU took advantage of a Breds miscue in the fourth to push across five runs. Dustin Dunlop started the rally with an RBI single to right center with one out. A hit batter put two on before a foul pop was dropped by the catcher, extending the at bat and resulting in a single to load the bases. Jayson Langfels delivered a sacrifice fly to right center and Anthony Ottrando plated two runners with a triple off the fence in right field. Faidley drove in his second run of the game with a single through the right side that took a bad hop over the head of Cunningham at first.
The Breds got one run back in the home-half of the inning as Cunningham beat out an infield single to second and went to third on Laws' single to right center. Moore plated Cunningham with a chopper to third.
MSU pushed the advantage to three in the sixth inning as Brandon Elliott singled to right field and went to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Cunningham drove in Elliott with a single to center field.
Matt McGaha (4-1) picked up the win in relief as he allowed four unearned runs on four hits over four innings. Greg Terry (3-3) took the loss after allowing eight runs, four earned, on 12 hits over 3.2 innings.
Cunningham finished the day 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs. He now sits two hits and three RBIs shy of tying the single-season record. Laws went 3-for-4 with a double, while Moore was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
