Padres 17th round pick earns second All-America honor
The postseason honors continue to rain down on Murray State first baseman Wes Cunningham as he was named a Second-Team All-America by Ping !Baseball, the organization announced Wednesday morning. Cunningham, who was selected in the 17th round by the San Diego Padres Tuesday afternoon, was named to the Collegiate Baseball All-America Third Team last week.
The Louisville, Ky. native gained national recognition after putting together the greatest offensive season in the history of Thoroughbred baseball. He finished the season by hitting .408 with 77 runs, 95 hits, 19 doubles, six triples, 22 home runs, 86 RBIs, 192 total bases and an .824 slugging percentage. Cunningham established new single-season marks at MSU for runs, hits, triples, home runs, RBIs, total bases and slugging percentage, while also setting Ohio Valley Conference single-season records in RBIs and total bases.
Cunningham's success in 2010 was not an accident. Over his four-year career, which included on six at-bats as a freshman, Cunningham hit .399 with 161 runs scored, 237 hits, 14 triples, 35 home runs, 169 RBIs, 406 total bases and a .684 slugging percentage. He is the school's career leader in batting average, hits, triples, RBIs and total bases, while ranking second in runs and fifth in home runs.
Cunningham is also one of 30 semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, honoring the top player in collegiate baseball.
