Murray State kicks off 2010 season Sept. 2 at Kent State
Four members of the 2010 Murray State football team were selected to the 2010 Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference Team by Phil Steele Magazine, the publication announced Thursday. Senior wide receiver Marcus Harris and junior defensive lineman Jamal Crook, along with junior kicker and punter Kienan Cullen were selected to the first team, while junior defensive lineman Lamar Theus was a second-team selection.
Harris (St. Louis, Mo.) enters his final season as one of the most prolific receivers in Racers history as he needs just 21 catches to become the school's all-time leader. He also has 1,414 receiving yards, ranking 11th on the all-time list.
Harris is also a major weapon in the return game, and was selected a Preseason Honorable Mention All-America kick returner by the Consensus Draft Services. Harris led the league and ranked seventh in the FCS with a 26.8 yard return average on 23 kickoff returns. He also averaged 15 yards on 10 punt returns.
Crook (Tampa, Fla.) has shown improvement in his first two years at defensive end, doubling his number of total tackles a season ago. He also ranked second on the team with 11 tackles-for-loss.
Cullen (Louisville, Ky.) was recognized as the top kicker and punter in the league. He was a first-team selection as the punter in 2009 and a second-team selection at kicker. As a punter, Cullen averaged 41 yards on 68 punts, including a career-best 72-yarder in the finale against Tennessee Tech. He booted 15 punts over 50 yards, and had 21 punts downed inside the 20-yard line. As a kicker, Cullen went 14-for-17 on field goals, and a perfect 22-for-22 on extra points.
Theus (Paris, Tenn.) is the anchor in the middle of the Racer defensive front and is coming off a season in which he registered 39 tackles and a pair of sacks. He posted at least five stops in five games, including a season-high seven tackles against Eastern Illinois.
The Racers open the 2010 season Sept. 2 at Kent State. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. central time. The home opener is set for Sept. 11 against Southeast Missouri at 6 p.m.
