Racer Soccer Picked First In Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Poll

The Murray State Racers are the favorite in the race for the 2010 Ohio Valley Conference women's soccer championship in voting conducted by the league's head coaches and sports information directors.
The Racers, who won the 2009 OVC Tournament title last season and the 2008 OVC regular season championship, received seven of the 18 first-place votes and 117 points, while Morehead State picked up nine-first place nods and 116 points. UT Martin took the last two first-place votes and 86 points for a spot in third place. Tennessee Tech is the fourth place pick with 77 points followed by Eastern Kentucky (74), Eastern Illinois (70), Southeast Missouri (60), Jacksonville State (32) and Austin Peay (16).
Murray State is coming off its first OVC tournament title after going 5-2-1 in conference action and posting an 11-9-2 overall record.
Beth Acreman enters her fifth season as the head coach of the Racers and will have her top scorer returning for the 2010 season. Senior forward Kalli McCoy (Benton, Ky.) led the team with six goals, including two game winners. Sophomore forward/midfielder Danielle McMurray (Germantown, Tenn.), who was named the OVC Co-Freshman of the Year in 2009, will also be back on the field for the Racers after she scored five goals and recorded five assists last year. Senior goalkeeper Tara Isbell (Mayfield, Ky.) will be back in net in 2010. Isbell recorded six shutouts last year to rank second in the OVC.
The Racers have a class of seven seniors that also includes: Laken Dirkes (Benton, Ky.), Rebecca Shultz (Ft. Campbell, Ky.), Katie Wilson (Ft. Wayne, Ind.), Audrey Wilson (Garland, Texas) and Rachel Longley (Middlesbrough, England).
The Racers open their 2010 season Aug. 14 at home at Cutchin Field with the Alumni Exhibition at 3 p.m., before playing the season opener at Bellarmine Aug. 20 also for 3 p.m.
