The entire Murray State football team came together for the first time Saturday morning as the Racers went through their first full-team practice inside Stewart Stadium.
The intensity picked up as position battles are being waged at every position. Players were flying around the field making plays, trying to impress the coaches to earn a spot in the starting lineup coming opening day.
“We incorporated a few new drills, especially a lot more ones-vs.-ones and twos-vs.-twos,” said head coach Chris Hatcher. “We finished with a real spirited practice and I was real pleased to see our intensity, and just see the guys excited about playing football.”
The team returns to field tomorrow afternoon as they conduct the first practice in full pads at 2 p.m. inside Stewart Stadium.
Practice Highlights
• During blitz pickup, the defensive line was able to get penetration and got sacks from Jamal Crook and Erik Fennell.
• The first-team offense was able to score on the first series against the defense as Jeff Ehrhardt found Ja-Vonta Trotter in the endzone on a corner route from 32 yards out.
• The second-team offense also scored on its first possession as Casey Brockman hit Marcus Harris across the middle on a 20-yard touchdown pass.
• The defense got some revenge on the next series as cornerback Nathan Brinkley stepped in front of an Ehrhardt pass for the interception and return for touchdown.
• Safety Jordan Sklba delivered a hard hit near the goaline to force a fumble that was recovered by the defense.
• The defense forced a pair of fumbles towards the end of practice to help them be awarded the victory in practice by head coach Chris Hatcher.
