The Murray State softball team continued its hot start at the plate from a week ago to pick up a pair of 8-2 and 9-6 wins Sunday afternoon against Wabash CC.
The Racers jumped to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on four hits and a walk. Megan Glosser singled to short to lead off the inning with an infield hit. Jenna Bradley walked two batters later, and Ellyn Troup gave MSU its first run with a double to left field. Meghan Sims scored Bradley on a grounder up the middle off the Wabash pitcher's glove to the shortstop, but the throw to first beat Sims for the second out of the inning. Stephanie Mattocks and Lauren Buch followed with back-to-back home runs; Mattocks' a two-run homer and Buch a solo shot, both to left center field.
After Wabash cut the Racer lead to 5-2 in the top of the fourth, Stephanie Edwards led the inning off with a single between the 3rd baseman and the shortstop. She eventually scored on a wild pitch with two outs.
Buch added the final two MSU runs of game one with her second home run of the game, a two-run blast to left field that scored Edwards.
Shelby Kosmecki tossed three innings, striking out one and walking one. Leslie Bridges tossed her first inning of the fall, recording a perfect seventh inning in the victory.
The Racers started out the same on offense in game two. Trailing 2-0, six consecutive batters reached base to open the bottom of the first as MSU scored six runs in the inning. Glosser singled to short and scored when Ali Hart doubled to right field. Jenna Bradley followed with a two-run blast to score Hart. Troup and Sims recorded back-to-back walks, and Mattocks added three more runs with the second home run of the inning.
Troup kept the runs coming in the bottom of the second with a one out blast over the fence with the bases empty in increase the MSU lead to 7-2.
The Racers added on their final runs in the third as Bradley doubled to left field to score Hart from first. Bradley took third base on the throw home and came around to score when the ball got away from the catcher and rattled around the backstop.
Wabash added three runs in the sixth inning as it threatened to completely erase the MSU lead. Kosmecki entered the circle in relief with two outs and the bases loaded and got a groundout to third to end the inning.
Mattocks led the MSU offense with four hits, five RBI, three runs and two home runs. Bradley scored three times and drove in three to go with her three hits, and Troup and Buch each drove in and scored a pair. 10 players had at least one hit and nine ended the doubleheader with at least one run.
The Racers improve to 4-0 in the fall exhibition schedule and return to Racer Field Oct. 10 against John A. Logan at 3:00 p.m.
