Breds begin preparation for Feb. 18 opener
Murray State's quest for the 2011 Ohio Valley Conference championship officially got underway Friday afternoon as the Breds held their first full-team practice on the turf inside Stewart Stadium.
The Breds will continue to practice there until the conditions at Johnny Reagan Field improve. Recent snow had head coach Rob McDonald shoveling snow off the turf to make it suitable for baseball practice.
“It is good to finally get out here and start practicing as a team,” said McDonald. “We have a lot of new guys on the team this season, and it is very important for us to continue the progress that we made in the Fall.”
MSU, who is the only team to finish in the top three in the OVC standings in each of the last two seasons, will have plenty of new faces in the lineup on opening day after losing five starters from last year's squad.
The Breds offense will be led by a pair of senior outfielders in Elliot Frey and Zach Noonan. Both players are entering their fourth season as starters. Sophomores Colton Moore and Brandon Elliott return after being named to the All-OVC Newcomer Team in 2010. Elliott was also selected as a Third-Team Freshman All-America by Ping!Baseball.
On the mound, senior left hander Jake Donze is the lone returner who saw significant time a season ago. Donze finished the 2010 season with a record of 6-6, with five complete games. The rest of the staff, including pitching coach Chris Cole, is new this season, with nobody else throwing more than 20 innings in their college careers.
The Breds open the 2011 season Feb. 18-20 on the road at UNC Asheville. The home opener is scheduled for Feb. 25 against Bowling Green.
