Patrick Newcomb turned in a second place finish for the Murray State men's golf at the Skyhawk Classic played at Paris Landing State Park in Buchanan, Tenn.
Newcomb paced the Racers with a second place finish in the field of 81 players with scores of 70-68-73=211, while Hunter York placed 12th with rounds of 73-72-74=219. Tyler Brown had scores of 78-75-72=225 for a spot in 32nd place, while Dustin Gosser placed 37th with scores of 75-77-77=227. Wade Thomson withdrew from the event after a first round 82 with an injury.
As a team, MSU was fifth in a field of 14 teams.
The Racers scored rounds of 296-290-296=882 to finish three shots behind fourth place
Tennessee Tech at 879 and six behind host UT Martin in third place at 876. Southern Illinois was the champion with an 860 total, while Jackson State was second at 874.
After the Racers in fifth place, the rest of the field included: John A. Logan (888), Lipscomb (891), Union (TN) (894), Alabama State (908), Trevecca Nazarene (909), Bethel (TN) (913), Christian Brothers (913), UT Martin B (918) and Bethel B (1010).
Chasten Howard led a trip of MSU players in the event as individuals with a spot in 50th place with scores of 75-79-78=232. Andrew Mitchell had scores of 82-81-75=238 and shared 65th place with Travis Thompson who had scores of 80-81-77=238.
The Racers next event is at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate (Oct. 30-Nov. 1) at Turtle Point Golf Club in Charleston, S.C.
