A pair of second half goals for Murray State helped push the Racers towards their first Ohio Valley Conference win of the season, knocking off Tennessee Tech 2-1 Friday afternoon at Tech Soccer Field in Cookeville, Tenn.
With the game tied at 0-0 halfway into the second period, Julie Mooney broke the stalemate to give MSU a 1-0 lead with a goal from straight off the center of the goal into the top of the net. The goal was her fourth in three games after scoring twice against Alabama A&M and once at home versus Austin Peay. She is now tied for the team lead with six goals and leads the squad with 14 points on the season in 13 games played.
Nine minutes later, Sophie Hargreaves gave the Racers (4-7-2, 1-2-1 OVC) an insurance goal following a foul on Tennessee Tech in the box. Hargreaves connected on a penalty kick at 78:18 to push the score to 2-0 on her second goal of the season.
Hargreaves strike would be needed as TTU got the goal back just minutes later. Shannon Rountree cut the Murray State advantage back to a goal at 79:35 as she cleaned up a deflected save near the net for the lone Golden Eagle goal of the game.
The Racers held a distinctive 16-10 shot advantage, placing 11 shots on goal to 10 shots by Tennessee Tech (4-11-1, 1-5) with six coming on goal.
Yi Du earned her fourth win of the season for MSU, entering at halftime and making three saves in the second half.
“Great team effort today,” head coach Beth Acreman said. “We remained focused and determined and I was pleased to see how the players reacted to this important game. Great goals by Julie and Sophie as well as a passionate team effort defensively.”
Murray State will look to grab another important OVC win on Sunday, playing its fifth of nine conference matches this season at Jacksonville State. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
