Junior Mike Kozlowski went 2-for-3 with three RBIs as 24 Karat Gold used a four-run first inning to defeat Biscuits and Navy, 9-5, in the first game of the Fall World Series Friday afternoon at Reagan Field.
A double and a walk setup Kozlowski in the first as he delivered a two-single to center field. Two more runs came across in the frame as Rick Linton drew a bases-loaded walk and Dylan Wheeler was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Navy responded in the bottom of the inning as Colton Speed singled to center and Brandon Elliott singled to left field. Jacob Rhodes plated a run with a single through the right side, and Cody Larson followed with a run-scoring single through the left side.
Gold added another run in the third as Ty Stetson reached on a fielder's choice before going to second on a wild pitch. Kozlowski followed with a two-out RBI single to center.
Gold took advantage of wildness in the fourth to push across three more runs. Clay Fuson and Noah Zipko each walked with the bases loaded, while Linton scored a run with a single to center.
Navy tried to rally in the fifth inning as three walks and a hit-by-pitch helped push across two runs and load the bases with two outs. Larson delivered a line shot to left that was caught on the warning track to end the inning.
Joe Major got the start and picked up the victory as he allowed four earned runs on seven hits and three strikeouts over 4.2 innings. Kyle Cornett took the loss after surrendering eight runs over 3.1 innings.
Cameron Wallace was very effective out the bullpen for Gold as he threw 2.1 shutout innings, striking out three.
The two teams will play the second game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 p.m. at Reagan Field.
