Murray State looks to wrap up a bid to the 2011 OVC Championships this weekend, closing out regular season action on the road. The Racers face Morehead Friday night in a 6 p.m. contest and travel to Eastern Kentucky on the final day of the regular season with a noon match.
The Racers have played their best soccer of the season over the past three weeks, winning four of their last five and scoring 10 of a possible 12 points in OVC action. Their hot streak has moved them from ninth in the conference up to fourth, and they sit just two points out of second place with two games remaining.
MSU won both matches it played last weekend, defeating Eastern Illinois 3-0 and knocking off SIU Edwardsville 1-0. Sophie Hargreaves, Shauna Wicker and Julie Mooney each scored first half goals over EIU, and Mooney scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season to score the win over SIUE. Hargreaves (Defense) and Mooney (Offense) were each awarded adidas OVC Player of the Week accolades for their efforts. Goalkeeper Yi Du picked up the win in both games. She has recorded three straight shutouts in net for the Racers and has played 300 minutes since allowing her last goal.
Morehead State enters the weekend coming off of a 3-2 win at home against Longwood in double overtime. The win broke a three game conference losing streak for the Eagles that saw them fall to ninth in the conference standings with a 2-4-1 record. They have held either a regular season or tournament championship in each of the last three years, winning the regular season title in 2009 and winning the OVC Tournament in 2008 and 2010. Morehead State was the victor in last season's meeting, winning a 2-1 midseason match at home.
Eastern Kentucky has alternated wins and losses in each of its four conference games before tying 1-1 against Longwood this past weekend. The Colonels hold second place in the OVC standings with a 4-2-1 record in conference play. EKU won the lone match between the schools last season, taking a 1-0 decision in Richmond, Ky.
