Racers In Second Place At MSU Invitational After Round One

The Murray State men's golf team came out of the first round of the MSU Invitational with a spot in second place on their home course, Miller Memorial GC.
After 18 holes of this 54-hole event, the Racers' 285 was two shots behind leader Lipscomb at 283. Tennessee Tech (286), Morehead State (287), Missouri Baptist (288) and Belmont (290) made up the top-6 squads.
The Racers have won all previous MSU Invitational titles since the event was started in 2004.
Patrick Newcomb led the Racers with a 3-under-par 68 and was in third place in the medalist race in a field of 75 players, while Hunter York was in ninth place after an even-par 71. Wade Thompson's 72 put him in 12th place, while William Hunt was in 34th place after a 74. Dustin Gosser carded a 78 and was in 52nd place.
MSU's second team was in 13th place in the field of 14 teams, led by Tyler Brown who had a 72. Andrew Mitchell was in 23rd place after a 73 and Chasten Howard's 79 was good for a spot in 59th place. Travis Thompson was in 68th place after an 82.
After UT Martin (295) in seventh place, the rest of the field included: UT Martin B (295), Kentucky Wesleyan (297), Tennessee State (302), Union (TN) (304), Lewis (305), Murray State B (306) and Brescia (315).
The course at Miller Memorial is playing 6,601 yards and to a par of 71.
The second round is underway this afternoon with the final round set for Tuesday at 9 a.m.
