The Murray State men's golf team came from three shots down to win their eighth straight MSU Invitational championship Tuesday when they carded a final round 280 to win by five over Lipscomb. The 54-hole event was played at the Racers' home course, Miller Memorial GC in Murray, Ky.
The Racers needed a come-from-behind effort and got it when three of their five players turned in scores under par which secured their eighth straight win in their home event since it was first played in 2004.
Patrick Newcomb, who was the medalist of the 54-hole event, led the way with a 4-under-par 67, while William Hunt and Hunter York added a pair of 1-under-par 70's.
“Our backs were against the wall,” MSU Head Coach Eddie Hunt said. “Our guys knew they had no margin for error today and they went out and attacked the golf course. I'm proud of the numbers they posted, which should boost our confidence as we continue playing this fall.”
Newcomb is the third straight individual champion for MSU in the event, following Hunt from 2010 and Patrick's brother Nick who was champion in 2009. Newcomb carded scores of 68-70-67=205 (8-under) to score a two-shot win over Lipscomb's Blanton Farmer.
William Hunt had scores of 74-69-70=213 to finish sixth in the field of 75 competitors, while York finished eighth with rounds of 71-74-70=215. Wade Thompson placed 20th with rounds of 72-75-73=220, while Dustin Gosser placed 45th with rounds of 78-74-74=226.
The Racers' rounds were 285-287-280=852 to slip past Lipscomb who was runner-up with scores of 283-286-288=857.
Belmont was third at 866, with UT Martin (869), Tennessee State (876), Missouri Baptist (879), Tennessee Tech (882), Kentucky Wesleyan (885), Union (TN) (891), Lewis (902), UTM B (906), Brescia (919) and MSU B (919) rounding out the field.
MSU's second team had rounds of 306-306-307=919.
Tyler Brown led with scores of 72-78-75=225, with Chasten Howard placing 52nd with scores of 79-77-74=230. Andrew Mitchell placed 56th with rounds of 73-77-81=231, while Travis Thompson was 63rd with scores of 82-74-77=233.
The MSU Invitational All-Tournament Team included five players from five different schools: Newcomb of Murray State, Farmer of Lipscomb, plus Tyler Cassety of Tennessee Tech, Brett Barry of Union and Ted Moon of Belmont.
